Sulayma visited, and her footsteps were followed

By her trailing hem, which erased their traces.

She hides her face to conceal her night journey,

For fear that the reproacher might awaken.

And can night conceal one who remains

In full daylight through her radiance?

Had her tresses not sheltered her as she journeyed,

Her radiance would have threatened the darkness with dawn.

So I spent the night, while the tribe kept watch,

    Quaffing wine until dawn.

Which of us, then, was most plainly drunk, though no

Hand had wrought havoc on us with winecups?

Her figure, her gaze, or I?

Three, with not one of them sober.

Then she turned away, walking in fear

    Among swords and spears,

In a dwelling whose quarters shine

With every mighty chief of sound understanding,

    Clasping a supple Khatti spear

That bereaves bodies of their souls.

And in the protected domain, perfumed by soil

Wafting scent like moist Mandali aloeswood,

Is a noble man who never drank a watering-place's stagnant water

As an ass sips sparingly from a shallow pool.

His large bowls gleam for the needy visitor

In hardship and ease, like water-drawing camels.
