Success lies beneath the strides of noble Mahri camels,

And honor above the edges of keen Indian swords.

    وَهَل تَدورُ الرَّحَى إلا على القُطُبِ

    And prudence's call awakens slumbering resolve;

And does the millstone turn except upon its pivot?

So why remain in a land whose dweller

Yearns for ease like distraught she-camels bereft of their calves?

Time has tainted my drink there with grit and muddied it.

What do the nights want from a youth far from home?

When shall I slake the thirst of brown spears at gaping wounds

Where they sway like well-ropes in wells?

For they have kept my camels thirsty, while the waters are blood,

And the pools have girded themselves with grass.

I glory in myself, though I stand among Mudar,

I wind my house's tent-rope strands around honor.

For aloeswood would be firewood, were it not for its fragrance,

And palms are prized for their fruit, not their frond-stalks.

And I have made my gaze roam elsewhere than among oryx-does

Who sway branches above dunes as they walk.

Indeed, eyes recoil from exalted heights,

And my eye's roaming-ground is where shooting stars swim.

It is the eye that forever keeps gazing

Toward lofty aims, attentive to petitioners, and into books.

And it had ailed; then God healed it, and it regained

A glance sharper than patterned, deep-biting swords.

And the sun gazes with an eye undiminished in

Its radiance by the clouds that veil it.

    فيها المَضاءُ وَإِن رُدَّتْ إِلى القُرُبِ

    And the striking edges of Mashrafi swords never fail;

They retain their keenness, even when returned to scabbards.

So glory rejoiced in good health,

In whose fresh robes I play with the shade.

And time grew radiant, till I thought its face

Was cut from the cheeks of shy, affectionate maidens.
