She came by night while we were in the heart of al-Batha,
She came while we were in the plains of al-Baṭḥāʼ
and night was spreading the thick locks of darkness.
And the night was spreading the darkness of gloom,
فرَأَتْthen she saw رَذاياworn-out mounts أنْفُسٍof souls تُدْميmake bleed بِهاon them

أيدي الخُطوبِ غَوارِبَ الأنْضاءِ
Then she saw souls like worn-out mounts, upon which
So she saw the mirrors of souls bloodied
the hands of calamity bloodied the withers of exhausted beasts.
By the hands of misfortunes, insistently importunate.

And when she offered us her baking,
the desert's approaches were blocked by them.
The horizons of the white land were closed off by them.
أأُمَيمَO Umaym كيفَhow طوَيتِyou traversed أروِقَةَthe porticoes of الدُجىdarkness

O Umaym, how did you cross the porticoes of darkness
O soil of Umayma, how you folded up the porches of gloom
through every dust-gray waste with darkened reaches?
In every murky, pitch-black expanse!
هلاwhy not اتَّقَيتِyou guarded against الشُّهْبَthe bright stars حينwhen تَخاوَصَتْthey squinted

فرَنَتْ إليكِ بأعيُنِ الرُّقَباءِ
Why did you not beware the stars when they squinted
If only you had feared the meteors when they bargained
and gazed at you with the eyes of watchers?
And turned to you with the eyes of spies!
خُضْتِyou waded through الظَّلامَthe darkness ومِنand from جَبينِكِyour brow يُجْتَلىis beheld

صُبْحٌ يَنِمُّ عليكِ بالأضواءِ
You waded through darkness, while from your brow was seen
You penetrated the darkness, and your brow distilled
a dawn that betrayed you with its radiance.
A dawn that nodded off upon you in lights.

So you came by night to one whose ribs enfolded burning grief,
So you knocked on ribs that harbored agony
who closed his eyelids in that grief upon specks of grit—
That the eyelids were unable to discern - no, they could not distinguish any illness.

Of the memory of the beloved, our entrails were roused.

I swear by a mouth drinking deep of your saliva,
By the cleft in your cheek, so brazen
as though it were bubbles upon tawny wine,
It is as though it were a love-spot on swarthy skin!

And your sick, healthy eyelids never shed
what sickness is; nay, may they never recover from sickness!
Illness - no, they never shed any sickness.

I shall surely defy the reproacher's wish, for often
I will go against the passions of the celibate one -
his reproach has ended by inciting desire.
For so long rancor has led to temptation through him.

And when hearts moved about, their intoxications
among beautiful women as shadows wander,
Moved about in singing girls.

My eyes pursued no one but you, and my heart
a scattering of desires turned my heart away from you.
Did not divert from you however passions divided.

And the least that yearning wrought was a halt
And the least that the foolhardiness of youth paused for
that seized the reins of tears at al-Khalsa.
Was a halt that seized the reins of tears through sincerity.

And a humbled ruin of your dwelling appeared to us,
The vestiges of your encampment appeared to us, humbled,
its beauty growing despite its desolation.
Its splendor increasing through desolation.

By the father of the dwellings, decay has walked through them,
The abodes of my father - decay has walked in them
and their landmarks vanished, save for scattered limbs.
And their landmarks have crumbled away except for ruins.

The clouds weep over them while its meadows smile -
may they remain forever between smiles and tears.
Ever wavering between smiling and crying.

And our mounts halted there and recognized them,
Our she-camels stopped at them, so we recognized them,
and curbed the twin sharp urges of vigor and speed.
And we stayed our yearning for the land of Mecca and Mashʻar.

And they swayed their flanks, as though
We shook from their sides as if their ears
their ears had been filled with the echo of song.
Were filled with the echo of singing.

And I dismounted, taking the earth for my bed, writhing
So I descended and lay down on the earth, writhing
on it like a mottled snake.
In it with the writhing of a smooth serpent.

With the scent of basil that you placed in it,
the hems of my wrap and cloak grew fragrant.
The hems of my cloak and gown were perfumed.

And I seemed, in the Imam's shelter, to be kissing
It was as though I was kissing the sanctuary of the Imam
at his two gateways the resting-place of exalted glory,
From its elevated threshold, exalted.

where white foreheads kiss his soil,
Where the white foreheads touch its soil humbly
and awe of him loosens the knee-bands of the mighty.
And its awe inspires love in the great.

And proud kings' strides fall short before him,
Compared to it, the hunts of royal kings are too short,
and poets' tongues grow long in his praise.
Yet the tongues of poets go on about it.

A king whose branches grew among the prophets,
A king whose branches grew in the prophets
and through whom ancestral roots flourished among the caliphs.
And whose lineage was purified through the caliphs.

He reached the utmost while his years were still in their first surge,
He reached the ultimate point while his venerable age
dewy with youth, yet mature in judgment.
Matured despite the blindness of opinions.

Thus his subjects came to seek refuge in his shade,
So the flock took refuge in his shade,
hoping for life-giving rain and a lion of modesty.
Hoping for life-giving rain and awe-inspiring lion.

And the lions' lairs in his days
And the lairs of lions in his days
are, through justice, like the resting-places of fawns.
Were like the resting-places of foxes through justice.

He filled the lands with battalions that had suckled nothing
He filled the land with brigades who had suckled
but the milk of unassailable might.
Only the milk of mighty, unyielding glory.

They rush to battle with keen swords
They hasten into the fray with swords
that mingled the scent of blood with musk's fragrance.
Whose unsheathing mingled the fragrance of musk with the smell of blood.

They leave their scabbards only long enough
Their scabbards were not emptied except wherever
to be bared, then sheathed in their enemies' necks.
A target was bared to be sheathed in the flesh of foes.

From every long-necked lion, drawing
through battle the hem of tightly woven mail.
The train of its tawny mane in nobility.

His spear's upper shaft glides through coats of armor
The effect of his spear flows in veins
like a serpent swimming in a pool of water.
Like a serpent swimming in the expanse of water.

Through them he both claimed rights and granted them,
He took rights through them and gave them together,
and prudence lies between taking and giving.
While rationality lies between taking and giving.

O son of the intercessor for rain, when already
O son of the Intercessor to Life, the branches
the boughs of the lush garden had clothed themselves in gray hair,
Of the singing garden have been clothed in rags.

the clouds drew near, and the petitioner almost milked
So the clouds approached and the downpour almost
with both his hands the teat of the rain-heavy cloud.
Flowed through its hands behind the pouring rain.

Without him, the gardens would not have watched, with eyes
If it were not for him, the gardens would not smell
of their blossoms, the portents of seasonal rains.
With their blossoms the idea of blessings.

Awe of you was made to fill the heart, and it
Your awe which left the rage of the sword
took the place of the sword's edge in battle.
In the skulls was created to overawe hearts.

And your minister unsheathed, in defense of your realm, a resolve
And Naḍā, your vizier, in his resolution, is enough
that suffices him in place of a gray host's charge,
To undertake the rising of a flame-like lion.

He repels whoever troubles him with their hatred,
alive with fear, but lifeless in his limbs.
Deadened of limbs from fear of death.

And he hits the mark of archery if any
suspicions that call forth a fierce, sidelong eye.
Suspicion appears, fearful with terror.

So it is as though the secrets of hearts cast their shade upon him,
It is as though the secrets of hearts shade him
their unseen depths borne by far-ranging tidings.
With their concealments, messages of news.

He strives and labors hard for your satisfaction even if
souls' lifeblood seethes against him with hatred.
The souls boil against him with enmity.

he undertakes the deflowering of a virgin plan.
He undertakes consuming the brilliant scheme.

And the inspiration of the caliphs in what they attempt
