O visit where the rain clouds pour in Iḍam,

Encircled by the eyes of the tribe's maidens!

Will you return one night, that I may spend it

In the star's keeping, amid jewels and robes?

Upon cheeks untouched by pallor rain down

    Kisses that piety never forsakes.

    وَالسَّيفُ نِعمَ مُجيرُ الخائِفِ الوَجِلِ

    And a keen, cleaving sword dispels my dread;

And the sword is a fine protector of the fearful and trembling.

At a dwelling where moist musk mingled

With earth revealing its dewy garden's fragrance.

And dawn startled night's herd, as it twisted

Its neck of deep darkness back over its rump.

When it shone forth, its lips parting in a smile,

I splashed its bright brow with streaming tears.

And Sulaymā bade me farewell, while the watcher saw

In her figure the same intoxication as in her eyes.

Then I departed on a spirited mount, and it went

At times slowly, and sometimes in haste.
