وَلِلرَّكبِand the caravan has بَينَbetween المأزَمَينِthe two mountain passes ضَجيجُa clamor
Nawar averted her gaze from me and turned away,
while the caravan clamored between the two mountain passes.
وَماand not ذاكَthat إِلّاexcept مِنbecause of عِتابٍa reproach نَبَذتُهُI flung it
إِلَيهاat her عَلىin ذُعرٍfear وَنَحنُwhile we حَجيجُpilgrims
And that was only because of a reproach I had flung
at her in fear, while we were pilgrims.
وَقُلتُand I said لَهاto her كَمhow long تَهجُرينَyou shun وَعَيشُناwhile our life
لَهُit has زَهَرٌa bloom يُصبِيcaptivates القُلوبَthe hearts بَهيجُdelightful
And I said to her, “How long will you shun me, when our life
has a lovely bloom that captivates hearts?”
فَقالَتthen she said مَعيwith me إِنif زُرتُI visit ماwhat يُوقِظُawakens العِداthe foes

Then she said, “If I visit, I carry what awakens the foes,
and they are like thick-necked lions when they rage.
فَلِلحَلْيِfor the jewelry has لاmay ... not عَزَّprosper الدَنانيرُthe dinars رَنَّةٌa ringing sound
وَلِلمسكِand musk has لاmay ... not عاشَlive الظِباءُthe gazelles أَريجُa fragrance
For jewelry—may dinars never prosper!—has a ringing sound,
and musk—may gazelles perish!—has a fragrance.”
