My two friends, wretched is the counsel you propose!

Have you two no hands to ward off calamities?

You two want me to send my praises on a visit to

a baseborn man—then my people would not be of pure stock.

And whoever gains wealth by debasing his honor,

then may he never taste life's savor except in humiliation.

And if you two wish to know what I conceal,

then my tongue is not to be trusted with it.

And at close quarters, my secret is confided to you both

    by a keen sword's edge or a spearhead's point.

And loyal brothers—I kept faith with them in their absence,

and defended them while spears drew near.

Then, when they gained wealth, they grew insolent with it,

and the tribe's hungry went uncared for among the well-fed.

I see hands that gained wealth after poverty,

belonging to the basest people in the vilest age,

and begrudged what they held—may their fingers be paralyzed!

And if you seek their bounty, may my own fingers be paralyzed!

And one of time's calamities is that I beg gifts from them,

while beneath my baldric lies the repeller of calamities.

But I am among a people untroubled

by tales at which both ears prick up.

When they pledge or make pacts, their pledges are

the pledges of smiths, with the fidelity of singing slave girls.

And their female neighbor is unprotected in peace,

and their male neighbor is unaided in terror.

Umm Amr wept when my riding camels were made to kneel

where lie the red hills of Hamadhan.

So she shed tears like pearls, pouring them

over the cheek of a dignified woman whose sash shifts loosely.

And she did not know that swords had clung

to the skirts of a gray-tressed, seasoned war.

It made men like lions weep, and cared nothing for

the weeping of beautiful women like gazelles.

And I rose and looped the white-blazed steed's reins over its ears,

and in my hand was a Yemeni blade, sharp on both edges.

And I am not, whenever time brings a calamity,

one whose place is hidden on adversity's racecourse.

If indeed a blessing from God extends my reach,

and I do not revive the two days of bounty and spearplay,

then no hand of a noble, gallant man ever laid me

against the breast of a chaste, timid-hearted woman.
