My two friends, if poverty lays me low, I care not
whether my face's water—my honor—is spilled, or my blood.

My bounty reaches all mankind if wealth lends me wings;
and I conceal my need from them when I am destitute.

And when the ʿĀmirī woman saw me impoverished,
tears flowed over her upper cheek, streaming down.

Then she said, as the calamities of the nights assailed me:
“Who is the noble Umayyad, so wronged,
يَزيدُincreases عَلىin response to لُؤْمِthe meanness of الزَّمانِtime تَكَرُّماًin generosity

who meets time's meanness with ever greater generosity,
while time gazes at him scowling, and he smiles?”
