عُلاًlofty eminence بِمَناطِat the hanging-place of السُّهاthe star Suha تَسْتنيرُshines
كَماas يَتَأَلَقُflashes وَهْناًat night صَبيرُa bank of clouds
Lofty eminence shines where Suha hangs,
With resolve, the heights of glory illuminate
As a bank of clouds flashes in the night.
As a weak child shines with grace.
وَمَجْدٌand glory رَفيعُlofty الذُّراthe summits دُونَهُbeneath it
لِطالِبِfor one seeking شَأْوِيَmy stature طَرْفٌa gaze حَسيرُweary
And glory with lofty summits, beneath which
And lofty glory, heights beyond reach,
The gaze of one seeking my stature grows weary.
For one with high ambitions is misfortune's gaze.
وَلِلْخِلِّand for the intimate friend مِنْfrom شِيَمِيmy virtues رَوْضَةٌa garden
وفيand in راحَتيmy palm لِعُفاتِيfor those seeking my bounty غَديرُa pool
And for a friend, my virtues are a garden;
And for the wicked, a garden from decent traits,
And in my palm is a pool for those seeking my bounty.
In my peace, for the chaste a river flows.
وَلاand no بُدَّescape مِنْfrom وَقْعَةٍa battle تَرْتَميflings forth
بِأَيْدٍwith hands تَطيحُfall away وَهامٍand heads تَطيرُfly
And there must be a battle, flinging
And a destined fall is sure to come
Hands that fall and heads that fly.
With hands that strike and zeal that grows.
وَيَوْمُand the day الأَعادِيthe enemies طَويلٌlong بِهاbecause of it
وَعُمْرُand the lifespan الرُّدَينِيّthe Rudayni spear فيهاin it قَصيرُshort
And the enemies' day is long because of it,
The day of enemies is long therein
And the Rudayni spear's life in it is short.
And the life of the feeble is short.
وَقَدْand indeed أَمْكَنَتْhave become available فُرَصٌopportunities فيamong الوَرَىmankind
وَلكنْand yet مَكَرِّيَmy charge فيهاamong them عَسيرُdifficult
And opportunities among mankind have indeed arisen,
Opportunities in life may be seized
Yet my charge among them is difficult.
But my tricks therein are difficult.
فَهُمْfor they ثَلَّهٌa flock غَابَare absent أَرْبابُهاits owners
وَنامَand have fallen asleep الرِّعاءُthe shepherds فَأَيْنَso where المُغِيرُthe raider
For they are a flock whose owners are absent,
They are a lost herd whose owners are gone
And the shepherds have fallen asleep—so where is the raider?
And the shepherds sleep, where is the changer?
