Let another be the target of reproach for delay,

    And turn away from the cry of one seeking aid;

And let his hard-steeled Yemeni blade grow fond of its sheath,

And glance off as a soft-steeled sword does.

And if he dons the battle-dust, he is lost within it,

As a comb is lost in thick hair.

For when calamities assail me, I am neither

Weak amid adversity nor slow to act.

My rival fears my fierceness; as for my friend,

With him I return to a gentle disposition.

And I make my keen sword lap up—while death follows

Its edge—a mouthful of thick blood spat forth.

And the seeker of bounty in my courtyard has full sway

Over gentle virtues that flutter above him.

And I have covenants: once their bonds are fastened,

They never part to reveal a broken pledge.

So here I am, noblest of all humans and jinn,

Father after father, back to Noah and Seth.

And the most eloquent of those who straighten crooked speech

That traverses the earth at a swift trot.

And mine are choice words, while they chant—

The reciters of evil—in foul words.

Kings' knee-bands are loosened in delight at them,

And my words mock al-Farazdaq and al-Ba'ith.

So spread word, O Najd, of what you see of me,

And tell more, O Tihamah, of my story.
