    Leave off blame, O sons of Salim, for my infatuation

    has struck every reproacher with a silencing reply born of my defiance.

    وَإِن أَرَ مِنهُم غَفلَةً أَتَلَفَّتِ

    I pass by Huzwa, head bowed for fear of enemies;

    and if I see them off their guard, I glance around.

    فَلا تَطمَعا في زَلَّةِ المُتَثبِّتِ

    And were it not for love, I would not follow hope’s deceits;

    so do not hope, you two, for a slip from one so circumspect.

    O Time, why have you separated my loved ones?

    And what do you seek from my scattered company?

    And I have a burning liver—here it is, cast

    to you; so cleave it as you wish, and crush it to pieces.
