لَقَدindeed طُفتُI roamed فيthrough تِلكَthose المَعاهِدِthe familiar haunts كُلِّهاall of them
وَسيَّرْتُand I sent wandering طَرفيmy gaze بَينَamong تِلكَthose المَعالِمِthe landmarks
Indeed, I roamed through all those familiar haunts,
And sent my gaze wandering among those landmarks.
فَلَمso not أَرَI saw إِلّاexcept واضِعاًone placing كَفَّa palm حَيرَةٍof bewilderment
عَلىon ذَقَنٍa chin أَوor قارِعاًone striking سِنَّa tooth نادِمِof a remorseful person
So I saw none but one resting a hand in bewilderment
On his chin, or one gnashing his teeth in remorse.
