I swore oaths by which lovers win

the favor of one whom reproach has turned away:

by the languor of glances that are a sword unsheathed,

and the delicacy of words that are fresh pearls,

and saliva whose taste wine nearly matches—

I think—and my surmise is true—that it is sweet.

Reproach has indeed worn me thin, its duration drawn out,

and, praise be to God, I have no sin but love.

You have taken command of my eye, and then my heart,

so neither my eye nor my heart aids me against you.
