I say—and boasting is what stirs the assembly,

and is not unfurled by one wrapped in falsehood.

We are those whose forebears ruled the world,

so their glory brands our necks with proud stiffness.

And no father among us strove for a noble deed

whose equal a son's endeavor did not embrace.

Thus there remained among us, inherited and newly won,

lofty glory whose fringes flutter above envy.

When we declare our lineage, people wish that they were

of us; yet we have never consented to be ascribed to anyone.
