عَذَلتُI reproached هُذَيماًHudhaym حينَwhen صَدَّhe turned away عَنِfrom الحِمىthe protected abode
بِأَيديwith the forelegs of المَطاياthe riding beasts مُسرِعاًhurrying غَيرَwithout لابِثِlingering
I reproached Hudhaym when he turned away from the protected abode,
Hurrying on with the riding beasts, without lingering.
فآلىso he swore يَميناًan oath رَبُّهُhis Lord عالِمٌknowing بِهاof it
وَقَدand indeed خابَhe has failed إِنif كانَتit was أَليَّةَan oath حانِثِof an oath-breaker
So he swore an oath, and his Lord knows it well—
May he fail if it was the oath of one who breaks his word—
لَمَاthat he had not ساقَهاdriven them عَمْداًdeliberately وَلاnor عَرَفَrecognized الحِمَىthe protected abode
فَقُلتُso I said وَقِيتَmay you be spared الشَرَّharm سِرْgo on غَيرَwithout ماكِثِlingering
That he had not driven them away deliberately, nor recognized the abode.
I said, “May you be spared harm. Go on; do not linger.”
وَقَدand indeed رَمَتِhurled at الذِّكرىmemory جُفونيَmy eyelids وَالحَشاand my heart
بِمُجتَلَبَيْwith the two things brought forth by شَوقٍlonging قَديمٍold وَحادِثِand new
Yet memory struck my eyelids and my heart
With the twin fruits of longing, old and new:
بِدَمعٍwith tears طَريفٍfresh جَدَّpressed on فيin هَمَلانِهِtheir pouring
وَوَجدٍand yearning تَليدٍlong-held بالجَوانِحِwithin the ribs عابِثِplaying havoc
Fresh tears that poured in earnest,
And an ancient yearning playing havoc within my ribs.
