I looked—and many a glance gives birth to death—
At a kohl-dark-eyed gazelle fawn in al-Ajraʿayn.
تَناوَلَit reached for أَفنانَthe boughs الأَراكَةِthe arak tree واِرتَدىand clothed itself
بِظِلٍّin shade طَوَتهُfolded it away الشَّمسُthe sun عَنهُfrom it ضَئيلِscant
It reached for the arak tree's boughs and clothed itself
In scant shade that the sun had folded away from it.
بِوُدّيَit is my wish أَنّيthat I أَستَطيعُI am able فَيَتَّقِيso it may protect itself

I wish I had the power, so it might shield itself
From the sun's blazing heat, with my ribs as its noonday refuge,
وَيألَفُand grows familiar with سَلْمىSalma بِالحَشىwithin the breast فَهوَfor it شِبهُهاher likeness

And be at home with Salma in my breast, for it is her likeness
In the loveliness of a languid glance, O Hudhaym.
فإِنso if لُمتَyou reproach لَمdid not يَنظِمْstring together نَجيبَينِtwo high-bred camels تَحتَناbeneath us

For if you reproach me, two high-bred camels beneath us were not strung together
Across a desert all night by the thread of a road.
أَناةٌa stately woman حَكاهاresembled her الظَّبيُthe gazelle جِيداًin neck وَمُقلَةًand eye
وَلَيسَand there is not لَهاfor her فيin حُسنِهاher beauty بِعَديلِany equal
A stately woman, whom the gazelle resembles in neck and eye,
And she has no equal in her beauty.
تَميطُshe draws aside لِثاماًa veil عَنfrom مُحَيّاa face لِبِشرِهِfor its smiling brightness
وَميضُa flash رَقيقِfine الشَفرَتَينِthe two edges صَقيلِpolished
She draws a veil aside from a face whose smile
Has the flash of a polished blade with two fine edges.
وَيَشكوand complains وشاحاهاher two sashes مِنَof الخَصرِthe waist دِقَّةًslenderness

And her two sashes complain of her waist's slenderness
To an ample rump that fills her waist-wrap.
وَتَرنوand she gazes بِنَجلاوَينِwith two wide eyes سِحرُهماtheir magic جَثاknelt
علىupon نَظَرٍa gaze يَسبيtakes captive القُلوبَthe hearts كَليلِlanguid
And she gazes with two wide eyes, whose magic has knelt
Upon a languid gaze that takes hearts captive.
بَكَتshe wept إِذwhen رأَتshe saw عِيسِيmy pale camels تُقَرَّبُbeing brought up لِلنَّوىfor parting

She wept when she saw my pale camels brought up for departure
Just before dawn, as my companions announced departure.
وَقَدand already فاضَoverflowed دَمعٌtears ضاقَwas too narrow عَنهُfor it مَسيلُهُits channel
عَلىover صَحنِthe surface خَدٍّa cheek لَمdid not يَسَعهُcontain it أَسيلِsmooth
And tears had overflowed their channel, too narrow for them,
Across the surface of a smooth cheek that could not contain them.
وَأَودَعتُهاand I entrusted her with قَلبيmy heart وَصَبريand my patience كِلَيهِماboth of them
وَأَترابُهاand her age-mates فيin رَنَّةٍa plaintive cry وَعَويلِand wailing
And I entrusted her with my heart and my patience, both of them,
While her age-mates were crying and wailing.
فَماso not الصَّبرُpatience عَنapart from وَجهٍa face جَميلٍbeautiful مَنَحتُهُI gave it
هَوايَmy love إِذاwhen فارَقتُهُI parted from it بِجَميلِbeautiful
So patience apart from a beautiful face to which I gave
My love, once I have left it, is not beautiful.
