كُفِّيrestrain أُمَميمَةُO Umamimah غَربَthe sharp edge of اللَّومِblame وَالعَذَلِand reproach
فَلَيسَfor ... is not عِرضيmy honor عَلىunder حالٍany circumstance بمُبتَذَلِto be debased
Curb, Umamimah, the sharp edge of blame and reproach;
for my honor is not to be debased under any circumstances.
إِنif مَسَّنيafflicts me العُدْمُpoverty فاِستَبْقيthen preserve الحَياءَa sense of shame وَلاand do not
تُكَلِّفينيburden me with مَديحَpraise of العُصبَةِthe band السَّفَلِthe base ones
If poverty afflicts me, retain your sense of shame, and do not
burden me with praising that ignoble band.
وَشِعرُand the verse of مِثليone like me وَخَيرُand the best of القَولِspeech أَصدَقُهُits truest

And the verse of one like me—and the best speech is the truest—
is what smiles to reveal pride and love.
أَمّاas for الهِجاءُsatire فَلاthen ... not أَرضىI approve بِهِof it كَرَماout of nobility
وَالمَدحُand praise إِنif قُلتُهُI utter it فالمَجدُthen glory يَغضَبُgrows angry ليon my behalf
As for satire, I reject it out of nobility;
and if I utter praise, glory grows angry on my behalf.
وَكَيفَand how أَمدَحُcan I praise أَقواماًmen أَوائلُهُمtheir forebears
كانواwere لِأَسلافِناto our ancestors الماضينَdeparted كالخَوَلِlike servants
And how can I praise men whose forebears
were like servants to our departed ancestors?
لَئِنif indeed أَطاعَتنيobey me الأَقدارُthe fates واِرتَجَعَتْand reclaim

صوارِميmy keen swords إِرثَthe heritage of آبائيmy fathers مِنَfrom الدُوَلِthe ruling powers
If indeed the fates obey me, and I win back
with my keen swords my fathers' heritage from the ruling powers,
وَلَمand ... not أُرَوِّI drench أَنابيبَthe shafts of الرِّماحِthe spears دَماًwith blood
فيin مأزِقٍa battle's press بِرداءِin a cloak of النَّقعِbattle-dust مُشتَمِلِwrapped
and I do not drench the shafts of spears with blood
in a battle's press wrapped in a cloak of dust,
فَلاthen may ... not رَفَعتُI raise لِساريfor the traveler through اللَيلِthe night نارَa fire of قِرىhospitality
تَكادُalmost تَرميpelts جَبينَthe brow of النَّجمِthe star بالشُعَلِwith flames
then may I never raise a fire of hospitality for the night traveler,
that almost pelts the star's brow with flames.
