By your two lives, my companions, leave me be,

That evening when the tribe espied lightning from Yemen.

And if you two will not join me in weeping,

Do not reproach a lovesick man who greets the old abodes.

    ولَمْ أتّهِمْ إلا القِلاصَ النّواجِيا

    I never thought lightning enamored of separation;

I had suspected only the swift young she-camels.

We, love's worn-out beasts, have met no calamity

Of adversity that did not decree parting.

Love has held to one resolve concerning us:

Whenever we feel safe from its reproach, it returns a talebearer.

No secret foe seeks leniency for us,

Nor do we know our friends except in doubt.

As though parting's terror had left us bewildered,

We fear a watching eye or placate a reproacher.

Our tears are driven back upon their tracks,

Though, but for talebearers, they would have found their channels.

God keep you—what a heart, so hard to win!

If you alarm it, it grows fierce, defying oppression.

Love called it until its reins were softened—

What an answerer—if only we could praise its caller!

And a woman whose drunken glances frolic in youth,

Languid; if youth departs, they conjure youthful play,

    فما لِسِواها فَضْلَةٌ في فُؤادِيا

    Opened a sanctuary whose ravines were impregnable;

No room remains in my heart for anyone but her.

And riders like arak shoots I guided,

While drowsiness had claimed the corners of their eyes.

When they swayed above the saddles, you would have thought them,

As darkness spat out dawn, vipers.

And when they halted at night, they fell prostrate upon the dust,

Bending down, with hands that overtop the lofty spears.

I sang their rearmost mounts onward; I would not have been

A camel-singer for my companions, but for love of Zamya.

But her memory, when night has unfurled

Its tresses, dictates songs to me.

Just this side of the plain in the land of Bisha

Are gazelles that outwit ravening lions.

When twisting waist-wraps grow angry with them,

We find the Amiriyya woman's waist-wrap content.

No nursing doe that turned toward a ban-tree shoot,

Whose fruit hung beyond her upreaching fawn,

Stretching her neck toward it to reach it—

What a fine source of sustenance, were it near!—

Then reached a branch like a forelock and began

Working her two horns through it like combs,

On a hillock, while the meadow sobered and grew drunk,

    Its unadorned soil remaining richly adorned;

Then turned toward her lair's shade and came upon

A fawn the marauding wolves passed between them,

Then fled in fear, seeking deliverance from death

    Through her hooves, while night dropped its anchors;

And when dawn shone, shaking off its shadow

    As maidens' hands scatter pearls,

And the breeze, itself faint, breathed

The scent of lavender suckling the morning rain,

Heaved a breath whose surge, when driven back

Into a burning man's breast, strives for the collarbones—

Was more grievously anguished than I, the day

Umayma bade Huzwa farewell and we settled in al-Matali.

She came to a land where the wolf forgets its treachery,

And, if lost, follows only the star as guide.

O Mount al-Rayyan, where are the watering places

For whose sake I left al-Unay'im's water, athirst?

My eye has cast a glance toward the people,

As a frightened gazelle guards against an archer,

Each of its eyes turned askance toward him,

Reproaching a glance that terror has made falter.

    أظُنُّ أَديمَ الأرضِ بَعدَكَ عارِيا

    It approved none among them but those who dwell in you;

Without you, I think the earth's skin bare.

The tribes have changed, save one band—

May rain water them as a people, and may you, a valley, be saluted!

I recalled those pledges to them, because

Through them I forgot time's misfortunes for many nights,

And a life whose cloak was stripped from my shoulders

By parting, which hands my reins to calamities.

    فَما افْتَرَّ إلا عَن بَنانِيَ دامِيا

    I remembered it while night's trailing hems were moist;

It parted only to reveal my bleeding fingertips.

I would ask Time to take back returning riches,

If it does not restore those bygone years.

I frighten its vicissitudes with the Imam's might,

For fear that they should lead my neighbor away captive,

Through a majestic man of the Prophet's house, who, when he names his lineage,

Pours lofty rank and noble deeds upon the world.

The stars draw alongside their lowest reaches, then turn back,

Stumbling, when they seek their furthest height.

The courses of his lineage shone when there were examined

The ancestries of men, which put on darkness as sandals.

When Kinana's noblest boast and meet

At a summit of glory that exhausts any rival,

He invokes al-Habr and al-Sajjad and hastens to the goal,

Wading through forelocks to the pilgrims' water-giver.

He secures the heart of the valley of al-Bitah,

And Quraysh thereafter settle in its bends.

Of the people with whom seekers find

    Abbasid noble qualities and benefactions.

Far-wandering praise returns to them in full,

And a seeker of bounty comes to them at dawn, petitioning.

When a boaster recounts that ancestral precedence,

It makes the deeds of later men seem faults to him.

And to one veiled in might, of their noblest paternal stock,

I urged the cherished, fully grown steeds.

Toward al-Muqtadi bi-llah, whom others follow,

They folded the deserts beneath us as one folds a cloak.

We sought refuge at the edges of rhymes; enough for us

Of glory is to offer him those rhymes.

We did not strain to compose them, because

We found lofty deeds, and so devised our themes.

O heir to the mantle whose owner is revered,

We attained our wishes and shared congratulations.

Congratulations to the treasure of the Faith on a noble one's arrival,

Who will become a lasting treasure for the caliphate.

He shone forth, blessed in fortune, a forerunner,

Awaiting a successor from the stock of prophethood.

So every throne cranes its neck in longing

Toward him, swaying its flank, drunk though sober.

Pulpits tremble with longing for him,

Their timbers having long whispered together of him.

May they never cease among you to bear an orator's weight,

Nor ever lack, through time, one of you to ascend them.
