At the landmarks of al-Muḥaṣṣab near Minā, I was moved to sorrow
At the landmarks of al-Muhassib in Mina, I was moved to sorrow
by a faint yearning moan that the camels echoed.
by a faint plaint echoed by the camels.
وَقَدand already رَفَعَraised الشُّعثُthe disheveled المُلَبُّونَthose reciting the pilgrimage chant أيدِياًhands
بحاجاتِهِمfor their needs وَاللَّهُand God مُعطٍa giver وَغافِرُand a forgiver
The disheveled pilgrims chanting the talbiya had raised their hands
And the disheveled pilgrims chanting the talbiya had raised their hands
with their petitions—and God is the Giver, the Forgiver.
for their needs—and God gives and forgives.
فَياso O رَبِّmy Lord إِنَّindeed المالكيَّةَal-Malikiyya حاجَتيmy desire
وَأَنتَand You عَلىof أَنto تَجمَعَYou bring together الشَّملَthe separated company قادرُcapable
So, Lord, the woman of Banū Mālik is my heart’s desire,
So, my Lord, indeed al-Malikiyya is my desire,
and You are able to bring us together.
and You have the power to reunite us.
وَلَمأَرَهاand I did not see her إِلّاexcept بنعمانَat Na'man مَرَّةًonce
وَقَدand already عَطَّرتْperfumed منهاof hers ثراهُits soil الضَّفائرُthe braids
I saw her only once, at Nu‘mān,
And I saw her only once at Na'man,
when her braids perfumed its soil with her scent.
and her braids had perfumed its soil.
فَلاso not الحُبُّlove يُجدينيavails me ولاnor الشَّوقينقضيthe longing ends
ولاnor دارُهاher home تدنوdraws near ولاnor القَلبthe heart صابِرُpatient
Neither does love draw me near, nor does longing ever end;
So love does not avail me, nor does longing end,
nor does her dwelling come nearer, nor can my heart endure.
nor does her home draw near, nor is my heart patient.
