Are these the swaying steps of a herd of wide-eyed antelopes,

or branches upon the sand dunes of Yabrin?

They cast the furtive glances of one inwardly afraid,

from a weakened eye unable to lift its lid.

As though they were oryx, their eyes turning eagerly

toward a lightning flash coupled with the wind's first gusts.

They appeared while the pale camels' reins hung loose,

a knee-fettered one among them yearning for a haltered one,

at a stopping place where you see only one wasted by love,

with bleeding eyelids, worn by longing, sorrowful.

So I cannot tell, having sent after them at midmorning

my gaze, which cannot be trusted with my heart,

whether their figures or the tribe's lances encircle me,

and whether eyes or the people's arrows strike me dead—

from each woman who fills both anklets, withholding

only to defer my due and put me off.

If only I knew—though 'if only' is futile—

while fate turns me aside from what it bids me hope for:

shall I bring my riding camels, parched with thirst,

to al-Udhayb's water, to quench their thirst and mine?

And will a breath of wormwood, when the breeze wafts it,

heal me of the burning thirst my soul conceals?

Or shall I visit the red tents by night, with

a bright companion who saves me from all I fear?

And my stride I sometimes fold up and unfold,

while terror now unfolds me, now folds me up.

When reason turns me back from what I intend,

tender youth gazes at me, tempting me on.

And many a band is never visited by noble deeds,

    and never shrinks from indecency and disgrace;

wealth gives them plumage; I will not bow to them,

though fate press hard upon me, whittling me away.

Never shall I be lured by watching a lightning flash

in a massed, dark cloud that blocks the horizon.

And the Imam Abu al-Abbas has a bounty

that quenches thirst, while meager bounty leaves me parched.

When I call on al-Mustazhir for it, there rush

from his palm clouds of bounty, answering my call.

He has an ambition enamored of the heights, gathering

noble deeds, maiden and mature alike.

Not content with earth, he chose the sky for it,

until it rested in an uninhabited abode.

Awe attends him, generosity within its folds,

and sternness that sound judgment mingles with gentleness.

And he makes the horses trample—while battle is pregnant—

the heads of foes, some struck down, some stabbed.

Beneath his banners are lions of battle,

on the back of each lean-bellied, milk-fed steed.

Black as circling eagles, they are surrounded

by might shining forth in victory and firm dominion.

When a renegade band rests secure in rebellion,

doom will not let it survive even a little while.

They march against it with swords, like plummeting

piercing meteors in pursuit of devils.

When he unsheathes his judgment, their scabbards do not sleep

around any gleaming blade, keen-edged and whetted.

O best of those whose bounty makes hopes conceive,

with a sure promise that gives birth to blessings!

The fast has departed, laden by you with generosity,

    bringing you an unending reward.

And Eid has come, its smiling lips parted,

bearing an auspicious omen that sets your sides swaying.

And prized mounts strode with us across the desert's breadth,

    lean-bellied, long-bodied, like wolves;

toward you—for goodness is sought and followed—

I urged them on like flocks of dusky sandgrouse.

while the pale camels' necks swayed with exhaustion.

Once like palm trees, they had become like date-stalks.

They carry your praise, and the reciter unfolds it

to reveal pearls strung where the necklace hangs.

The envier listens to it, brimming with delight

and with burning anguish hidden in sorrow's resting place.

Praise is reaped by no man who cloaks himself

in baseness, a loser in the bargain for high honor.

Others we look to for worldly gain, and praise,

but you are praised for this world and for religion.
