وَمُرْتَدٍand one clad بِالُّدجَىin darkness رَوَّحْتُI gave rest to صَهْوَتَهُits back
بَعْدَafter اخْتِلاسِsnatching ذَماءِthe last breath of الرِّيحِthe wind بِالعَنَقِwith a swift gait
And a steed clad in darkness—I gave its back rest,
In the dark night I soothed his panting chest
After snatching the wind's last breath with its swift gait.
After the wind stole the kisses of his neck
فَماso not مَسَحْتُI wiped بِعُرْفِwith the mane of الصُّبْحِdawn حافِرَهُits hoof
وَلاand not فَلَيْتُI combed for lice عَلَيْهِupon it لِمَّةthe tresses of الغَسَقِdusk
So I did not wipe its hoof with dawn's mane,
Yet at dawn I did not stroke his hoofs
Nor, astride it, did I comb through dusk's tresses.
Nor bid him farewell as night fell
وَلَيْسَand there is no فِيon الأَرْضِthe earth مَنْanyone يَطْويtraverses إِليهِtoward him فَلاًdeserts

And there is no one on earth to whom one would cross deserts,
None in this land can journey to him
Where daybreak's smiling mouth dispels the dusky hue of night's lips.
To soothe the night’s torment with the smile of dawn
