And a sarh tree on Najd's uplands, with drooping
A nimble gazelle in the pastures of Najd
Branches in a pool that kept it watered.
Her branches in a pond shaded and watered
إِذاwhen الصَّباthe east wind نَسَمَتْblew gently والمُزنُand the rainclouds يهضِبُهاpour rain upon it
مَشىwalked النَّسيمُthe breeze علىin أَينٍweariness يناجيهاwhispering to it
When the east wind blew gently and rainclouds showered it,
When the breeze blows gently and the rain patters
The breeze walked wearily, whispering to it.
The breeze caresses her, whispering endearments
تَقيلُtakes her noon rest فيin ظِلِّهاits shade بيضاءَfair-skinned آنسةٌa companionable woman
تكادُyou almost تَنشُرهاunfold her لِيناًfor her suppleness وتَطويهاand fold her
A fair, companionable woman takes her noon rest in its shade,
She rests comfortably in her shade, white and lovely
You could almost unfold her and fold her, so supple is she.
You’d think she was spreading out softly or folding in
سودٌblack ذوائِبُهاher tresses بيضٌwhite ترائبُهاher upper chest
حمرٌred مجاسدُهاher dyed garments صُفرٌyellow تراقِيهاher collarbones
Black are her tresses, white her upper chest,
Black are her tails, white are her rumps
Red are her dyed garments, yellow her collarbones.
Red are her thighs, yellow her high haunches
عارضتُهاI crossed her path فاتَّقَتْso she shielded herself from طَرفيmy gaze بجارَتِهاwith her neighbor
كالشَّمسِlike the sun عارَضَهاpassed before it غَيمٌa cloud يواريهاhides it
I crossed her path, so she screened herself from my gaze behind her neighbor,
I glimpsed her and she glanced back timidly
Like the sun when a cloud passes before it and conceals it.
Like the sun glimpsed through clouds that veil her
وَنِمتُand I slept مُلقىًstrewn علىon سقطِthe edge of اللِّوىthe curving dunes لِمَميmy locks
وَنَفحَةُand a waft المِسكِof musk تَسريdrifts فيthrough نواحيهاtheir parts
And I slept, my locks strewn on the edge of the curving dunes,
I lay back, resting on the sand at my camp
And a waft of musk drifted all through them.
The scent of musk spreading through the air around her
ثمthen اِنتَبَهتُI awoke ولاحَand gleamed الفَجرُthe dawn فيin ظُلَمٍdarkness

Then I awoke, and dawn gleamed amid darkness,
Then I woke, dawn breaking through the darkness
It began scattering its radiance from the darkness's edges.
His brilliance bursting forth from all around her
وبلَّand soaked دِرعِيmy coat of mail ومهريand my colt صوبُthe downpour of غاديَةٍa morning raincloud
فالبرقُso the lightning يضحكُهاmakes it laugh والرَّعدُand the thunder يُبكيهاmakes it weep
And a morning cloud's downpour soaked my coat of mail and my colt;
I donned my coat of mail and rode to Ghada
So lightning makes it laugh, and thunder makes it weep.
Lightning smiles at her, thunder weeps for her
والعَينُand the eye مِنfrom حُبِّlove of أَعرابيَّةٍa Bedouin woman عَرَضَتْappeared

And my eye, for love of a Bedouin woman who appeared,
My eyes brim with tears for a bedouin girl glimpsed
Swims in tears that I was shedding.
Adrift in the flood of tears she elicited
فَلَيتَهاso, if only she لِيَmine والآمالُyet hopes أَكثُرهاmost of them

يُعذِّبtorments النَّفسَthe soul بالدُّنياwith this world وماand what فيهاis in it
So, if only she were mine! Yet hopes—most of them—
Would that she were mine, though hopes deceive
Torment the soul with this world and all that is in it.
Torturing the soul with all the world contains
