A thought stirred at the memory of you, O Umayma,

In my heart, bringing a longing lover's tear,

And drives all but you from my heart, just as

My tears denied sleep passage through the corners of my eyes.

Love has left of me only a remnant of life

That laments its yearning—so take away what remains.

Can one recover when his physician brought the sickness?

And can one regain his senses when the charm-healer's eye bewitched him?

If your eye has tasted your saliva, then what

I suffer from the drinker is the cupbearer's doing.

My soul be your ransom, cruel one, who was granted

The servitude of hearts and the obedience of eyes.

So, because she has few equals in what she was given,

She has grown haughty with her many lovers.
