عَلاقَةٌa passion بِفؤاديin my heart أَعقَبَتbrought about كَمَداsorrow
لِنَظرَةٍbecause of a glance بمِنىًat Mina أَرسَلتُهاI cast it عَرَضاby chance
A passion in my heart has brought me sorrow
A relationship with my heart ensued, after
from a glance I cast by chance at Mina.
A glance I sent her way casually,
وَللحَجيجِand for the pilgrims ضَجيجٌa clamor فيin جوانِبِهِits precincts
يَقضونَthey fulfill ماwhat أَوجَبَmade obligatory الرَّحمَنُthe All-Merciful واِفتَرَضاand ordained
And the pilgrims' clamor rang through its precincts,
And the pilgrims make clamor around it
as they fulfilled what the All-Merciful required and ordained.
Fulfilling what the Merciful ordained obligatory,
فاِستَنفَضَso made tremble القَلبَthe heart رُعباًwith terror ماwhat جَنىwrought نَظَريmy gaze
كالصَّقرِlike a falcon نَدَّاهُdampened it طَلُّdew of اللَيلِthe night فاِنتَفَضاso it shook itself
Then what my gaze had wrought shook my heart with terror,
So my heart shuddered with fright at what my sight attained
like a falcon that, dampened by the night's dew, shook itself.
Like an eagle stirred by the night falling suddenly,
وَقَدand indeed رَمَتنيshot me غَداةَon the morning of الخَيفِal-Khayf غانيَةٌa beauty
بِناظِرٍwith an eye إِنif رَمىit shoots لَمdid not تُخطىءِmiss الغَرَضاthe mark
And a beauty had shot me one morning at al-Khayf,
And in the morn of fright, a singing girl assailed me
with an eye that never misses the mark when it shoots.
With a gaze, that if cast, does not miss its mark, surely,
لَمّاwhen رأىsaw صاحبيmy companion ماwhat بيails me بَكىhe wept جَزعاًin anguish
وَلَمand did not يَجِدfind بِمنىًat Mina عَنin place of خُلَّتيmy companionship عِوَضاa substitute
When my companion saw my plight, he wept in anguish,
When my friend saw my state, he wept profusely,
and at Mina found no substitute for my companionship.
Finding no substitute for my seclusion, verily,
وَقالَand he said رُحْgo ياO أَخاbrother of فِهْرٍFihr فَقُلتُso I said لَهُto him
ياO سَعدُSa'd أَودَعَlodged جِسميmy body طَرفُهاher glance مَرَضاan illness
And he said, "Go, brother of Fihr," and I told him,
And said: “Go, O brother full of passion,” so I said:
"O Sa'd, her glance has lodged an illness in my body."
“Her glance made my body sick, O Saad,” assuredly,
فَبِتُّso I spent the night أَشكوI lament هَواهاlove for her وَهوَwhile he مرتَفِقٌleaning on his elbow

So I spent the night lamenting my love for her, while he leaned on his elbow;
I spend the night complaining of her love, and he listening
lightning from Najd stirred his longing whenever it flashed.
Longingly to the Najdi lightning when it flashes speedily,

Its gleams appeared like a sword stained
Its lights appear like a blood-stained sword,
along its edge with blood, or like a vein as it pulsed.
Resembling blood, or sweat when pulsing rapidly,
وَيَمتَريand draws forth دَمعَهُhis tears ذِكرىmemory of أُصَيْبِيَةٍlittle boys

And the memory of little boys drew forth his tears;
And he sheds tears remembering the calamity,
when the memory of them stayed with him, he rose.
When the memories persist, rising up angrily,

And he could not bear what he was suffering, so he left me
Unable to bear the suffering, he left me
between the sand ridge and the prayer ground, beside her, and departed.
Between the grove and the mosque, and went forth promptly.
