A liver melts, and an eye streams with tears.

When, then, will reproach restrain my passion?

What does the reproacher seek thereby, and how often

does folly twist his tongue over it?

As for forgetting love, attaining it

is hard, but my tears flow readily.

And my life's blood for a young gazelle, as though he had

a drunkenness that makes him sway and straighten.

Like musk in color and in fragrance,

fragrant ambergris is drawn from him.

Thus the dawn of gray hair was unveiled—when he resembled

the night of youth—by his evenly set teeth.

O my reproacher, my ribs have bled

from longing for him, and my heart is deranged.

You love gazelles whose eyes are kohl-dark,

yet fault a gazelle who is kohl-dark all over.

He was fashioned from the kernels of hearts, as though

eyes had shaken their blackness over him.
