    A birth among Banu ‘Ijl adorns them,

    As noble horses are adorned with white forehead blazes.

    ثم الهلال ابن بدر لاح في الأَثر

    At this birth the sun, daughter of dawn, appeared rising;

    Then the crescent, son of a full moon, shone in her wake.

    So may Ibn Sa‘d never cease to trail, through them both,

    The hem of happiness between the sun and the moon.

    فالرَّوْضُ بالزَّهْرِ والأَشجارُ بالثَّمرِ

    And a man's lineage is adorned by his children;

    For the garden is adorned with blossoms, and trees with fruit.

    It is glory enough for Rabi‘ah to be congratulated

    On this birth by the sons of God's caliphs from Mudar.
