Your bounty is a rain-laden cloud in times of drought.

And your resolve is piercing in war, sharp-edged.

And your teat is sweet to suppliants, yet it

    In battle's terror is bitter—bitter indeed—to foes.

    إلى الحلم راسي والجبال تمورُ

    Yours is knowledge whose sea overflows, O brother of bounty;

You are anchored in forbearance while the mountains heave.

When bright swords are drawn for war by your two hands,

Then oath-breakers' throats become their scabbards.

You looked upon kindness with a lover's gaze,

So you have no equal in lavishing generosity.

    When we seek gifts, bounty

With you is plentiful, and giving profuse.

Your arms for battle are slender, tawny spears,

    Whose points shatter within men's breasts;

    وبيض صقيلات المتون ذكورُ

    And sleek horses, like wolves of thorn scrub, filling the open land;

    And bright swords, polished of blade and hard of steel;

And close-woven, stout mail whose links quiver,

As a pool ripples on a day of north wind.

And you are rain whose outpouring the people praise,

And a mauling lion when the battle-dust blackens.

Long of sword-belt, noble in lineage,

In counsel, even Qasir falls short of him.

His countenance beams with openness on either side,

And a cheerful look heralds the attainment of success.

So, O Adud al-Din, who has never ceased

Going at evening and at dawn to bestow bounty,

Your sword is a moat that shields the subjects,

And your counsel is a wall around the caliphate.

And you are its arrow, striking every rebel,

And you are its protecting back and its supporter.

Indeed, this morning it has gained in you a just man,

Who bears down on its enemies and deals unjustly with them.

He deems loyal counsel to it his duty—bless him!—

And counsels it toward whatever brings good.

So every trusted man except you is a traitor,

And every vizier apart from you is a sham.

O wealth of a suppliant whose wealth time has destroyed,

And helper of a captive whose helpers are few,

To the heights have raised you, O noblest scion,

Full moons, towering mountains, and seas.

May you remain, through the passing nights, much praised,

Your share of them happiness and joy.

But for you, no impregnable frontier forts would be taken,

Nor would mouths smile upon noble deeds.

Enjoy praise whose like has never been sifted out,

Nor has the full moon traveled where it travels.

When they repeat it in the assembly, there wafts

Musk from its sides, and perfume spreads.

And I race ahead to every goal

Of which Jarir fell short in verse.

I swear: you have indeed bestowed bounty on me graciously,

And I am grateful for what you bestowed on me.

So abide in bliss whose purity is never troubled,

And a life that stays fresh as life itself changes.
