يا وارث الأنصار يا نصيري

من الزمان الخائن العسير

من الزمان الخائن العسير

O heir of the Ansar, O my defender

O inheritor of the Ansar, O my helper

against treacherous, harsh Time,

From the deceitful, difficult times

قل للعلاء ذي الندى الغزير

قل للعلاء ذي الندى الغزير

الزينبيّ القمر المنيرِ

الزينبيّ القمر المنيرِ

tell al-ʿAlāʾ, whose generosity is abundant,

Tell Al-'Alaa, of abundant dew,

al-Zaynabī, the shining moon,

The luminous Zainabiyya moon

أحسن أخلاقا من الغدير

أحسن أخلاقا من الغدير

إذا صفا والزهر النضيرِ

إذا صفا والزهر النضيرِ

finer in character than a pool

Of better morals than Al-Ghadir

when clear, and than fresh blossoms:

When it is clear, and fresh flowers

فلو تراني والرجا سميري

فلو تراني والرجا سميري

أسري مع الناس بلا خفيرِ

أسري مع الناس بلا خفيرِ

So if you could see me, with hope my nightly companion,

If only you could see me with hope as my friend

traveling by night with the people, without an escort,

Walking with people without a guard

تعتلج الأطماع في ضميري

تعتلج الأطماع في ضميري

أضرب للحنطة بالشعيرِ

أضرب للحنطة بالشعيرِ

longings contending within my heart,

Ambitions stirring in my conscience

casting lots with barley in hopes of wheat,

I pay wheat with barley

عدّيتها نحوي بالطيور

عدّيتها نحوي بالطيور

عمرت فينا عمر النسورِ

عمرت فينا عمر النسورِ

you would send it my way with the birds.

I likened them in my way to birds

May you live among us as long as vultures live.

They lived among us the life of eagles
