My lord, Awn al-Din Yahya, you have indeed

Revived the faded law of [generosity?].

May you ever possess judgment that shines bright

In every dark and murky [crisis?].

You smile cheerfully upon petitioners when

The face of frowning Time scowls.

O guardian of the realm through your stewardship of it,

From foes—we would ransom you, what a guardian!

And you who wear prudence as coats of armor, when

An armored, mail-clad man's resolve is no help.

Your palm has become a torrent of generosity,

Dwarfing the downpour of the dripping, murmuring cloud.

Whenever the night of [battle dust?] grew black,

Your white blades turned red with dye-staining blood.

Some people dozed instead of seeking high honors,

But you are neither slack nor forgetful.

Through generosity you [planted?], seeking fruit,

My praises—glad tidings to you, what a planter!

So hear my tale: it is astonishing,

About a horse of mine, crippled and worthless.

He will delight, yet is not worth, when

    Auctioned, even the groom's wages.

He is not young in years, but

    Looks like [a withered palm-trunk?].

And though he was [a laggard?], he indeed

Lived to see Dahis's day of racing.

A lame man on foot is likelier to escape when

He flees from this horse's knightly rider.

He sways from weakness, not coquettish grace, when

He flees from his knightly rider.

He walks on four legs, and reaches

His feeding trough on the fifth day.

    I found him utterly wary

Of his saddle, but [quite at home?] with eating.

So favor him with barley, and take

A [reward?], and shelter the wretched old creature.

And may you stay safe! How often you have made flow

The water of bounty through my withered bough.

And, given your [kindness?] toward me, I am not

Without hope that you will lighten my burdens.
