Listen, tell Saʿdā: we have no desire for you.

Nor do the wide eyes of cows enchant us.

For we have contented ourselves with those of narrow

Eyes—and God rewards whoever is content with less.

    He is handsome, yet full of coldness;

And I have never seen purity in this world without taint.

Nor have I forgotten when I flirted with him near a garden,

Beside a pool where the water flowed down.

So I said to him, 'Bring me roses'—though I only

Meant the roses of his cheeks, and he did not realize.

He said, 'Wait for me a blink of an eye; I will bring them.'

I said to him, 'Far from it! I cannot wait.'

He said, 'And no roses but those of the cheek are at hand.'

So I said to him, 'I am content with what is here.'
