Indeed, I have linked my glories to a father

I have reached my glory through a father

Who won glory and vied with the heights.

Who has attained excellence and climbed to the highest

وأجاب داعيه وخلفني

وأجاب داعيه وخلفني

وحديثه فكأنما يحيا

وحديثه فكأنما يحيا

And he answered his summoner, leaving me

He answered those calling him and left me behind

And his memory behind—so it is as though he lives.

His words are as if he still lives

وتلوت عمي في تغزله

وتلوت عمي في تغزله

وشربت ريا من هوى ريا

وشربت ريا من هوى ريا

And I followed my uncle in his love poetry,

I recited the verses of love by my uncle

And drank my fill of love for Rayya.

And drank the wine of passion

فكأنني هو في صبابته

فكأنني هو في صبابته

وكأنه في حسنها دنيا

وكأنه في حسنها دنيا

So it is as though I were he in his ardent longing,

So it is as if I am him in his youth

And as though, in her beauty, she were Dunya.

And as if he lives on through her beauty
