No creature with a padded hoof was ever duped but us,
He was not deceived by the charm of a soft-footed beauty
after dealing with Umm Hunayn, sister of the ʿIbād.
After the sister of the devout, mother of Hunayn.
وَعَدَتناshe promised us بِدِرهَمَينِfor two dirhams نَبيذاًa fermented drink
وَعَدَتنا بِدِرهَمَينِ نَبيذاً

أَو طِلاءً مُعَجَّلاً غَيرَ دَينِ
She promised us wine for two dirhams,
She promised us for two dirhams some wine
or boiled-down wine, for cash, not on credit.
Or a hasty covering, other than religion.
ثُمَّthen أَلوَتshe made off بِالدِرهَمَينِwith the two dirhams جَميعاًboth together
ثُمَّ أَلوَت بِالدِرهَمَينِ جَميعاً
ياO لَقَوميhelp, my people لِضَيعَةِover the loss of الدِرهَمَينِthe two dirhams
يا لَقَومي لِضَيعَةِ الدِرهَمَينِ
Then she made off with both dirhams.
Then she squandered both dirhams altogether.
O my people, alas for the loss of those two dirhams!
Oh my people! For the loss of the two dirhams!
