And a tawny wine from Jurjan, never approached
By a Muslim, nor boiled in a pot even for a moment;
وَلَمand not يَشهَدِwitness القَسُّthe priest المُهَينِمُmurmuring نارَهاits fire

Nor had the murmuring priest attended its fire
By night, nor had a rabbi prayed over its cooking.

Yahya brought it to me when I had slept a while,
And Sirius had set, and the Eagle was sinking.
فَقُلتُso I said اِصطَبِحهاdrink it as your morning draught أَوor لِغَيرِيَfor someone other than me فَاِسقِهاthen pour it

So I said: "Drink it as your morning draught, or pour it for someone else;
For what have I, after gray hair—woe to you!—to do with wine?

I abstained from it in the years gone by;
How, then, play the youth now that life has grown long?

Shame or veil between him and what he does,

Then leave him, and do not envy him the life he has lived,
Even if Time draws out for him the cords of life."
