سَرَتْshe traveled by night وقدand already وَقَعَhad fallen السّاريthe night traveler لجانبهonto his side
والشمسُand the sun تَضْرِبُstrikes دُهْمَthe blackness الليلof night بِالبَلَقِwith black-and-white mottling
She traveled by night, when the night traveler had fallen onto his side,
and the sun streaked the blackness of night with white.
بدرٌa full moon لملتمسٍfor a seeker غصنٌa bough لمعتنقٍfor one who embraces
خمرwine لمغتبقfor an evening drinker مسكmusk لمنتشقِfor one who inhales fragrance
A full moon for the seeker, a bough for one who embraces;
wine for the evening drinker, musk for one who inhales fragrance.
كأنماas though الروضُthe garden أهداهاgave her as a gift وشيّعَهاand escorted her
فاستصحَبَتso she took along لمّةًa company منof طربةrevelers العَبَقfragrance
As though the garden had offered her as a gift and escorted her,
so she took along a company of fragrance's revelers.
وأقبلتْand she approached تحسبُthinking الظلماءَthe darkness تَكْتُمُهاconceals her
وقدand already رَمَتْهاaimed at her نجومُthe stars الليلof night بالحدقwith eyes
And she approached, thinking the darkness concealed her,
though the stars of night had aimed their eyes at her.
والصبحُand morning يَقْدَحُstrikes sparks فيin الظلماءِthe darkness نائرةًa blaze
كأنهاas though it were تفثةُspittle المَصْدورِof one with an ailing chest عنْout of حَنَقrage
And morning kindled a blaze in the darkness,
as though it were spittle spat in rage by one with an ailing chest.
والشرقand the east يفهقoverflows والآفاقُand the horizons واردةٌcoming to drink
وأنجمُand the stars الليلof night قدalready أَيقَنَّhave become certain بالغرقof drowning
And the east brimmed over, while the horizons came to drink,
and the stars of night were already certain they would drown.
والفجرand dawn يُظْهِرُreveals فوقَabove الليلthe night آيَتَهُits sign
وللشّمالand the north wind has عليهupon it وقعةُthe fall الصّعِقِof one struck by lightning
And dawn displayed its sign above the night,
and the north wind fell upon it like one struck by lightning.
تَتَوَّجَتْshe crowned herself بالدجىwith night's darkness فالشّعْرُso the hair منof غَسَقٍdeep darkness
والخدُّand the cheek منof شَفَقٍtwilight's glow والثغرُand the mouth منْof فلَقِdaybreak
She crowned herself with darkness: her hair was of night's gloom,
and her cheek of twilight's glow, and her mouth of daybreak.
ألهوI amuse myself بمسكِwith the musk شَذاهاof her fragrance لاnot أُحاولُI seek ماwhat
وراءَbeyond ذاكthat ولوand even if حَاوَلْتُI tried لمdid not أُطقI could manage
I delight in the musk of her fragrance; I do not seek what
lies beyond that; even if I tried, I could not.
فبتُّso I spent the night أحسبُthinking إنيthat I قدalready طرقتُhad visited by night بهاwith her
روضاًa garden شممتُI smelled بهin it طيباًfragrance ولمand did not أذُقI taste
So I spent the night thinking that with her I had visited by night
a garden where I smelled fragrance but tasted nothing.
