O you in whom all people seek refuge,

Whether compelled or free to act.

You are spring itself; it is only that

Time has lavished its bounty upon spring.

The watcher grew heedless, so I was visited by

A moon whose rising places are my ribs.

Then he gazed toward the flow of the cups,

And you know the libertine best.

So send it, to console souls

And secure the frightened one's peace.

So I may find a substitute for his saliva,

And he may find a substitute for my tears.

Hims has spurned me; may every drizzling cloud water it,

The hills cry out in thanks whenever it pours.

And I did not fear that I would settle in a town

Where its people cause choking grief, though it is a wasteland.

And they have not obscured me; they have obscured glory.

And they have not neglected me; they have neglected learning.

And between my ribs lies something—if its smallest part

Were in Radwa's flanks, it would almost split apart.

I desire from the days what they do not desire,

And I hope for what holds no hope for me.

And deprivation keeps me far from every goal,

And my soul is torn apart in grief over it.
