Laughing, revealing pearls,
Laughing about the passions,
Unveiled, revealing a full moon,
Traveling beyond the full moon,
ضَاقَgrew too narrow عنهُfor him الزمانْtime
وَحَواءُand the compass صَدْريof my breast
Time grew too narrow for him,
Time has become too narrow for him,
and so did the compass of my breast.
And my chest is hot with love.
آهْah! ممَّاat what أجِدْI feel

Ah, what I feel!
Oh! From what I feel,
What I feel has wasted me.
His kindness heals what I feel,
قامَhe rose بيwith me وقعَدْand sat down
He raised me and set me down,
He stood by me and settled,
violent, yet unhurried.
A persistent lover.
كلماwhenever قلتُI said قَدْenough

Whenever I said, 'Enough!'
Whenever I say “it’s done,”
he said to me, 'Where is enough?'
He says “where is it done?”

And the slender one bent,
with a fresh sway,
With soft shaking and freshness,

Her hands toyed,
the two hands of the east wind and the rain.
With youth and raindrops,

خذtake فُؤاديَmy heart عنْfrom يَدْa hand
I cannot do without you.
I have no choice but you,
Take my heart from my hand.
Take my heart by the hand,
لمdid not تَدعْyou leave ليfor me جَلدْendurance

You have left me no endurance,
You left me no composure,
except that I keep striving.
But I am drained.
مَكرعٌa drinking-place مِنْof شَهَدْhoney

A drinking-place of honey,
A sip from honey,
and my longing bears witness.
And my longing bears witness,
ماwhat لِبِنْتِfor the daughter of الدِّنانْthe wine-jars
وَلِذاكَand for that الثَّغْرِthe mouth
What has the daughter of the wine-jars
For the daughter of the faith,
to do with that mouth?
And that smile,
أينwhere محياthe face الزّمانof time

Where is the face of time
Where is the life of time,
beside the face of embers?
Compared to the life of embers,
بيin me هوىlove مُضْمَرُhidden

ليتَwould that جَهْديmy effort وَفقُهْits match
Within me is a hidden love;
In me is hidden passion,
would that my effort matched it.
If only my effort understands,

Whenever it appears,
then my heart is its horizon.
Then my heart understands,

That sight
His love cannot be healed,
does not cure the love it inspires.
By my father, no matter what,

My father be his ransom, however he may be:
A stellar cycle,
celestial, pearl-bright.

He charmed until both became clear:
His excuse and mine,
his excuse and mine.
Is there a way to you,
هلis there? إليكَto you سبيلْa way

Is there a way to you,
Or until I despair,
or to my giving up hope?
A tear or a breath,

عَبْرةًa tear أوor نَفَسَاa breath
I have melted away, save a little:
What can I say,
a tear or a breath.
My hopes in fate are bad,
ماwhat عسىmight أنto أقولْI say
ساءَgrew bad ظنيmy opinion بعسىof 'perhaps'
What might I say?
And all is finished,
I have lost faith in 'perhaps.'
While I seek advice,

releasing from the reins
No blame on whom blames,
my anguish or my patience.
If he refrains from me,

What would it cost the one who blames me
Is there besides Rim’s love,
if he left me alone?
His religion is to blame me?
هلْis it? سوَىother than حبِّlove of ريمْa gazelle
دينُهُhis creed التَجنيunjust cruelty
Is it anything but love for a gazelle
I am confused in it,
whose creed is unjust cruelty?
While it makes me sing,
أناI فيهِfor him أهِيمْwander love-mad
وَهَوْand he بيof me يُغنيِّsings
I wander mad with love for him,
I saw you before,
while he sings of me.
You don’t know anymore,

ليسthere is not عليكَupon you ستدريْyou will know
I have seen you with my own eyes.
Time will be long,
Nothing is incumbent on you—you will know.
And forget my mention,
سَيَطولwill lengthen الزمانْtime
وستنسىand you will forget ذكريthe memory of me
Time will stretch on,
As for my love, it has weakened,
and you will forget the memory of me.
So I find no shelter,

As for my passion, it has grown tyrannical;
And no rest for me,
so I find no refuge,
Love him,

For me, make me love,
How dear

Oh he, and he is most strange,
Enchanting!
He takes me,

Oh, what a marvel—he is more wondrous still!

I was guided but why?
When he appeared and tormented me,
And I came humbled,

وأقبلتُand I approached مُدِلاself-assured
I confronted him, and he sought refuge,
Repenting,
and I approached, self-assured.
To the advice of him who blamed me,

But this will not help,
by my passion, one among the lovely women—
His glances are his soldiers,

so this one will not bow,
So greet him, or else
humbled by drawing near.'
Innovate,
سلطانْa sultan

A sultan:
With soft singing,
his glances are his armies.
That grazes,

A garden:
In my heart sincerely,
his words are its mantles.

Well-watered
Like the stars rise,
with luxury that weighs him down.
He is named,
ألمَّاhe drew near
فإنْfor if تَلفّتاhe turns to look
He drew near;
Intentionally to be insulted,
for if he turns to look,
He matched both the ignorant,

فَسالِمْهُso make peace with him وإلاّor else
you see people shattered to pieces;
With that boy,
so make peace with him—or else.
She leaned,

How wondrous
Towards me, upset,
is a soft-voiced fawn!
Her garden,

He grazes
Didn’t know what to do,
in my unblemished heart.
She was confused,
يَطْلُعْhe rises

He rises
And her mother listened,
at the rising-places of the stars.
Of what,

He is named
Makes this young man love me,
deliberately, so that he may be described.

Both circling ones came abreast,
We won’t say no to him.
through him, of that place.

She went mad;
she did not know what to do.
