    How fare hearts,

    when, behind closed eyelids,

lie eyes whose blades are the keenest

    of death’s arrows?

    سهامها عيناهُ

    His eyebrows are bows,

    their arrows his two eyes;

    قد خطَّهنَّ اللهُ

    like a scribe’s two nūns,

    which God has drawn.

    And a mustache’s greenish hue,

    with what his lips contain

    of pearls and fragrance.

If I sold my soul and my faith

for a sip from those dusky lips,

    I would not be cheated.

O you who hold yourself aloof,

    if you discern

    his beauty as I do,

    and the cheek embroidered

    with the finest embroidery,

    and the wondrous beauty mark

that has wandered among the wild roses,

like a Black man standing tall

    in a garden of jasmine.

    who persists in blaming me;

    حبي لهذا الغزالِ

    and the way of righteousness

is my love for this gazelle,

    who, among the beautiful,

    is of the highest order:

    a figure like a bough

    in bending and suppleness,

and a waist—if anything rivals it,

it is my faith, in frailty.

    begging him to grant me a kiss;

    but he shyly refused—

I think it was bashfulness on his part.

    So I said, submissively,

    what Qays said to Abla:

    As for me, my beloved—

[Meaning unclear in the supplied wording: naṭīsh min gharshūnī.]
