He captivated me with the magic of wide eyes—
He enchanted me with the magic of his eyes,
a gazelle who mingles estrangement with union.
A gazelle interspersing separation with union.

Those who reproach me have hemmed me in over him.
Those prone to blame surrounded me,
Gently, all of you: reproach brings no solace.
Patience, for blame brings no comfort.

For you I have cast off my horsecloth and bridle straps;
I have shed my rationalizations and excuses for you,
I am a leading racer, and love is my racecourse.
I was first and love is my racetrack.

Of the bright stars of constancy.

With them I passed, while Time knew nothing,
I share times with them while life remains unknowing.

Drinking companions of enduring joy

As if our wine is pure fire.

His fingers more dewy than the clouds.

And a tender, amorous maiden, wasted by separation—
The cheek of a lovely one whom separation has rendered ugly
her beloved then returned to her,
And whose intimacy returns to her afterwards.

so joy returned and affection grew firm.
So intimacy and love become firm
She says, with good fortune aiding her:
As she says when fortune has assisted her:

"My beloved's home has drawn near to mine;
The abode of the one I love drew near from afar
he visited, though he was no frequent visitor."
And he visited though he was not inclined to visitors.

One who doubts my loyalty and is divided.

In his face are teeth that
at which reproach grieves and chokes.
Sadden blame but give joy.

How near is the beloved
to those who love him—and how distant!
To his lovers yet far from the hostile.

Sweet yet causing sorrow,
he soothed my lovesickness for him and brought me joy.
Grieving the sick at heart but bringing joy to the blissful.

Fears to call you by name lest it defame you.

full of conceit, thwarting me.
You are the one my imagination occupies day and night.

Do not be fooled by me,
to protect me, nor a blade that strikes home.
For it is either patience or demise.

What promise of love can there be between beauty and I
in love is that one who has never seen you should love you.
That does not create and separate?

How long shall I be deluded, with nothing gained?
To see the beloved of my heart and be obsessed.

A covenant of love that never wears out.
What kisses and warm embraces there would be!
