شبابي ولا يُلْقي شبيبته الحِسْل
I wear away my youth under time's rule and turns,
while the lizard does not cast off its own young vigor.

It is a final decree of the days; I resented it,
yet its being final did not restrain me.

كأنْ لم يقرّبه ذِمامٌ ولا إلّ
My familiar spirit turned away, with my right and my wrong,
as though no bond or pledge had drawn him near.

I pursued pleasures only with regret
that their first draught would have no second.

May the land you do not inhabit be laid waste,
even if generosity and giving should grow there.
