فإنيfor I أخافُfear الياسمينَthe jasmine علىfor the sake of الوَرْدِthe rose
فإني أخافُ الياسمينَ على الوَرْدِ
Cast another glance over the two sides of that cheek,
Take another look at my cheek, that mole,
for I fear what the jasmine may do to the rose.
Lest the jasmine wither upon the rose.
وَخُذand take لهماfor them both دمْعيmy tears وعَلَلّلْهُماand refresh them both بهwith it
وَخُذ لهما دمْعي وعَلَلّلْهُما به
فإنَّfor دمُوعيْmy tears لاnot تُعيدbring back ولاnor تبديbring forth
فإنَّ دمُوعيْ لا تُعيد ولا تبدي
And take my tears for them both, and refresh the two with them;
Take my tears for them; let them drink of my tears,
for my tears neither bring back nor bring forth anything.
For my tears bring no reprieve, no cure.

Otherwise, in a cup of wine there is sustenance
Else, in the wine-cup there is solace
that takes the place of quenching thirst, for you or for me;
To take the place of water for you or me.

In your sweet spittle, were it a garden
could be refreshed with camphor, musk, and laurel.
Sprinkled with camphor, musk, and basil, too,

And the water of my youth would have been sweeter to drink,
My youth’s water would have been a sweeter spring
if the nights had not competed with you at the watering place.
Had the nights not jostled you from the flowers.

Hopes—I do not care if they prove false
I care not if you are deceitful in your affection,
and perish; yet everything turns upon my yearning.
If it passes, but my rapture depends on your love.

Is the phantom that visits me every night sent by you,
Does the fanciful specter visit you each night
upon something like a sword's edge or a striped cloak's border?
With a sword’s edge or the piercing of frost?

It would race the night toward me, if there were an intercessor
He vies with the night to come to me if only
from sleep, or were there no watchman of wakefulness.
Drowsiness or a wakeful critic were not my wardens.

It learned from me how to delight in love,
He has learned from me the pleasures of love,
while I suffer; why did it not remain true to the pledge?
Yet, the wretch! Why does he not honor his vow?

Union comes easily to it as long as it remains distant,
Reunion seems easy to him while he stays aloof,
yet when it draws near, nothing is easier than rejection.
And the easiest thing when one draws near is rejection.

And on a night when it came to me, I had slept a little,
One night he came to me while I slept a brief sleep,
and the star and I had an appointed time for that sleep.
And I and the stars were expecting him.

It came and greeted me amid watchfulness and dread,
He pressed between my neck and neck,
and nothing is sweeter than nearness despite distance.
And nothing is sweeter than a visit after absence.

And a glimmer from the night, amid the darkness, unsettled it,
But the gloom of night glimpsed him
as the mark of gray hair appears in curly locks.
As the gleam of white appears in the black hair.

It saw my tears red and my gray hair gleaming white,
It saw my tears as red and my hair white
and my extreme wasting, and yellow pallor upon my cheek.
And deemed my slenderness and sallow cheeks too great.

So it wished I were its necklace and its sash,
It wished that I were its necklace and sash,
though it could not bear the weight of sash or necklace.
Though it could not bear the weight of sash and necklace.

It came and infected me with its wasting and sleeplessness,
It blamed its stinginess and wakefulness
though this longing had more right to be contagious.
Though this yearning was more worthy of blame.

It turned away; do not ask about my state after it,
It turned away, so do not ask after me anymore,
but ask the days about its state after me.
But ask the days about my state after him.

People differ in their fortunes and the paths to them:
Some people vary in fortune and its paths:
some wealthy in their greed, others poor in their renunciation.
One thrives on greed and another on abstinence.

But as for me and al-Hadrami, we
As for me and Al-Hadhrami we
have divided glory, from Ghawr to Najd.
Divided the heights between us from valley to plateau.

I returned with poetry, defending its banner,
I have guarded the standard of poetry,
and Ibn Isa returned with lordship and glory.
While the son of Isa defended power and glory.

A youth who cares not for the triumph of those who win high honor,
A man who does not care who gains supremacy
once both his palms are filled with praise;
If his hands are full of praise.

and a sword that vies with every sword through its own worth,
A sword that outshines all other swords in itself
when a sword boasts of its baldrics and sheath;
When it prides itself on its fine blades and sheaths.

and a star of radiance—or radiance itself—whenever it appears,
A brilliant star that gives good fortune whenever it rises
it beams with beneficence and rains down good fortune;
Announcing good fortunes and showering prosperity.

and a mountain—Radwa is no greater in stature,
A highland that does not please any but the highest summit
but some speech is more pleasing to sound judgment.
But some words are dearer to the right path than others.

And what of Radwa? It is only a towering peak,
Radwa is lofty but she is not like a towering landmark
standing firm, of a dark-red sand-ridge or solid rock.
Visible from a barren pass or an open plain.

And many a mountain on earth has a loftier summit
How many a mountain in the land has a higher summit
and a safer refuge—if only its high ground were of use!
And protects more fiercely if its ravines could avail.

And they had its like on Mount Sinai,
At Mount Sinai they had its likeness
through error in what they claimed, and through deliberate intent.
In clear error and purposeful misguidance.

Yet it bore Radwa aloft in its flight,
But Radwa took her highest flight,
and we have seen nothing more fortunate than fortune's favor.
And we have not seen better assistance of determination.

It is a sea in which you see minds plunged
for pearls hidden in unbinding and binding.
Seeking the hidden pearls of discourse and composition.

Its two shores recede, and its billows swell,
Its expanse receded and its swells subsided;
and there are no vessels but those of hope and affection.
Every ship stems from hope and affection.

So turn aside to its shore when it is still,
So ply its coast when it is still,
amid lush, fresh growth in moist, clotted earth.
Through stilled, glistening sands.

And if it surges, and you can muster prudence, come to it;
And if it rages and the belt of stars appears, approach it,
for bright stars are found in murky darkness.
For stars are flowers in the cold darkness.

Through Isa I have reached the utmost of all nobility,
I have attained with Isa the limits of every glory,
so if I am denied, I am neither wealthy nor destitute.
So I thrive whether given or deprived.

And leave Malik until you see how he strives,
Leave Malik be till you see how his effort goes,
for neither of you was without lordship while still in the cradle.
For neither of you is one who did not err in the cradle.

Such is glory: its root and branches spring from you;
Glory to you both - its origin and branches -
it has passed among son, father, and grandfather.
Circulating between son, father, and grandfather.

The rhymes of poetry have come to you as a delegation from love,
The rhymes of poetry came to you as envoys of passion.
and some poetic rhymes find more favor than a delegation.
Some rhymes of poetry are luckier than the envoys.

Will your eminence admit the feast, if it draws near,
Good omens for you if the feast approaches
under an auspicious bird-omen and a fortunate ascendant?
On the auspicious bird and fortunate ascendant.

Time has come covering the earth, and fate is inclined
the smallest share between your welcome and rebuff.
To the easiest luck between your union and separation.

My lord, I have not valued you as I ought,
but it is the poems' utmost effort, not mine.
But the effort of poems is not the effort of me.

So nothing remains but that you pardon graciously,
There remains only that you forgive the summarizer,
and forgiving the servant is part of the master's generosity.
For the generosity of the Master is forgiving the slave.
