إذ فاتَ في الدنيا فعزَّ المطلبُ
Youth was joy itself, and so I desired it;
Youth was joy itself, so I sought it,
once it had passed, the quest for it in this world grew hard.
Once it had passed in this world, and what I sought proved elusive.

The rapture of youth is what is preferred—not wealth,
Youth’s rapture is what moves us, not wealth,
nor the wine-cup, nor the eloquent, expressive string.
Nor the cup, nor the eloquent, enchanting string.

Or is it not so? All these are indeed assembled here,
Otherwise, all these things are at hand,
except for youth—so why, then, are we not enraptured?
Except youth—so why do we not rejoice?
