They said, having come early to reproach me, when they saw

That I remained alone, without a friend:

“Why have you not acquired the friendship of a companion

Who would help you face the vicissitudes of time?”

So I answered them—and truth defends itself,

And truthfulness seeks no witness to attest to it—

“Indeed, ‘friend’ is the name of a notion; we have not found

Among its seekers in creation anyone who has found it.

Who can provide them for me, when God has not created them?

If I have not spoken the truth, then bring one.”
