تأبَى صروفُ الليالي أن تُديمَ لنا

تأبَى صروفُ الليالي أن تُديمَ لنا

حالاً فصبراً إِذا جاءتْك بالعَجَبِ

حالاً فصبراً إِذا جاءتْك بالعَجَبِ

The vicissitudes of the nights refuse to preserve for us

The nights' turns refuse to make a state last for us

Any state; so be patient when they bring you the unexpected.

So be patient if they bring you wonder

إنْ كان نفسُكَ قد منَّتْك كاذبةً

إنْ كان نفسُكَ قد منَّتْك كاذبةً

دوامَ نُعمَى فلا تغتَرَّ بالكَذِبِ

دوامَ نُعمَى فلا تغتَرَّ بالكَذِبِ

If your soul has falsely promised you

If your soul promised you falsely

Enduring bliss, then do not be deceived by falsehood.

Continuance of bliss, then be not fooled by lies

أو خيَّبَتْكَ لدى البأساءِ من فَرَجٍ

أو خيَّبَتْكَ لدى البأساءِ من فَرَجٍ

يُديلُ منها فكَذِّبْها ولا تَخِبِ

يُديلُ منها فكَذِّبْها ولا تَخِبِ

Or, amid hardship, has made you despair of relief

Or disappointed you at hardships of relief

That grants victory over it, then disbelieve your soul and do not despair.

That flows from it, then call her a liar, and don't lose hope
