O two ban-trees of Wadi al-Arak, may you be shielded

by my life and kin from adversity's night visitor.

I love you both as a coward loves his lingering life-breath,

though on the day of battle I am no coward.

I delight in your being watered by the earliest rain,

from a broad autumn raincloud, pure white to the eye.

Can you both help me for an hour,

to seek a heart that strayed long ago?

From your two clearings, amid the herd, there crossed my path

a gazelle who saw me furtively and shot me.

And if that very herd returns one day,

I shall exact my due from whoever struck my heart.

Ah, who will help a lovesick man in Iraq, stirred to longing

by Yemeni lightning flickering at al-ʿUdhayb?

Jealous lest he watch its gleam

are guileless ones among the pale gazelles there, and lovely maidens.

They took command of my heart's path to forgetting,

and gave passion's torment the power to turn my reins.

I have fulfilled love's desires, except for a pleasure

that would make a jealous man suspicious of a chaste woman.

    ويفسُقُ طرفي دونَها ولساني

    My hand, and all between it and my inmost self, are chaste;

while, short of it, my gaze and tongue transgress.

I meet her in private, though the jealous man suspects our dealings,

both innocent: two fragrant cloaks of Yemeni cloth.

I promised my companions I would regain my senses, but

my heart's sickness refused to let me keep my pledge.

Whoever blames me, let his heart taste love,

so he may know whether I have the strength to forget.

I yearn for the land of the Hijaz, and among them is

an obstinate debtor who, if he wished, would pay me.

I grieve that I cannot escort them wherever they head,

    with a clipped-wing bird's sorrow over flight.

It was they who, after leaving, pulled from patience's service

my two hands, and set my molar to biting my fingertips.

And how can I hope to be freed, when it matters so little

to the tribe's free folk that I am captive?

    فإِن لم تُعينا فاذهَبا ودعاني

    I held you both in reserve, my friends, for hardship;

if you will not help, then go away and leave me.

I counseled you both; counsel, so long as it comes

up against mistrust, is a kind of delirious talk.

And I said: Pass through the tribe's grounds, you two, and beware

    there of both thrusts—an eye's and a spearpoint's.

Can you two be safe from their young women's treacherous attacks,

even if their young men grant safe conduct?

How many a man safe from their thrusts is still a target

for an eye's volley or a thrust of fingertips!

Safer indeed than my soul, on the evening it reaches

the tribe on the gravel plain, is a wooden bowl of milk.

My soul will go forth at dawn, with piercing wounds in our entrails,

without arrows or spear-thrusts exchanged between us.
