    O son of those to whose rule bowed

    For ages the necks of Arabs and Persians,

    The bounty of their palms took the clouds’ place,

    And their radiance left no need for the sun.

    The Tahirids—they are the ones who ordained

    For people the creed of generosity and valor.

    And as though the beads of their sovereignty

    Were fastened to Shamam or Quds.

    They passed away, and you retain from their legacy

    Nobility of lineage and dignity of soul.

    If you do not wear the crown about your head,

    Then your eminence is greater than it, in my estimation.

    فاقْنَعُ به بَدَلاً بلا بَخْسِ

    The dominion of your merit surpasses their kingship;

    So be content with it as a substitute, without loss.

    You renewed with me the pledge of your kindness toward me,

    And watered what you had raised from my planting,

    مُلْسِ المُتونِ نوافرٍ شُمْسٍ

    With rare pearls, trim and finely honed,

    Smooth-backed, skittish and untamed;

    Sympathizing with me over my complaint of pain

    That shattered my strength and muffled my voice.

    نابي وجَدَّتْ بعدُ في نهسي

    The days have indeed, unjustly, blunted

    My fang, and afterward persisted in biting me;

    And noticed good fortune when it was joined

    With virtue, then struck it with loss.

    If they hurt my molar, they proved powerless

    Against a nabʿ tree too noble for the molar.

    They are among my rivals, and have known

    My noble patience, yet found my touch unfamiliar.

    You are the right hand; and if unharmed be the

    Right hand, then there is no sorrow over the molar.
