    O seeker of our secret,

awed by the matter and incredulous,

look at the water of life, which

    holds wonders for whoever reflects.

    White and brilliant in appearance,

it dyes whatever mingles with it red.

So it is pure silver in appearance,

and pure gold in its inner nature.

And it revives the dead; decay had crept

into them, leaving them crumbling, wasted bones.

And it burns the body that had rebelled

against the flame of fire and grown haughty.

Through it the diamond softened, despite its hardness,

and talc dissolved through it until it flowed.

And it diminished the sheen of iron, which

had hardened and refused to submit to being broken.

Nor did it leave the copper's shadow

within it; thus its color became radiant.

The barren-bellied one becomes, at its touch,

    pregnant, concealing the greatest king.
