O our neighbors at the valley bend, how did you withdraw

to confer in private, and hide your talk from me?

And my ears have heard the whispers of your departure—

so may my eye never see, nor my ear hear!

I warn you of my tears' deluge: so exchange

your camels for ships when parting draws near.

And in the camp is one whose two waistcloths are drenched in tears,

and another whose cheeks are embroidered with beauty.

When their cheeks meet and the two draw close,

the sun of clear skies appears to you in a cloud-dark night.

And a woman visitor—night's collar had been buttoned

over dawn, and darkness trailed its sleeve—

came, sweeter to my heart than wishes,

and more delightful than dawn's light slumber on my eyelid.

    وإِن سَفَرتْ أبصرتُ بدراً على غُصْنِ

    When she turned away, I saw a bough upon a dune;

and if she unveiled her face, I saw a full moon upon a bough.

I spread my cheek for her and kissed her palm,

in submission—not the kiss of one touching the sacred Corner.

And when we exchanged words between us,

and bared our hearts' secrets without veiled words,

I swore to her by the sacrificial camels, their throats bleeding,

an upright, truthful man's oath, without reservation:

You are indeed the core of my heart and soul, and the one

I mean even if I seek another love.

And since I joined their ranks, lovers have shared nothing

but the dregs of my longing and the remnants of my grief.
