O night, blessed are those who have fallen asleep!

How long must this sleeplessness and grief last?

    طَنَّ بأمرِي وقِصَّتي البلدُ

    My plight is strange, and my story a marvel;

The town resounded with my plight and my story.

The wind said, when it saw my sickness,

“By God, there is no body beneath his robe!”

And fire said, when it saw my liver

melting, “Away from me, O liver!”

Fire and the breeze have pitied me, yet

the one on whom I lean has no pity for me.

If only I knew—he does wrong when

I do good—where that anger comes from!

I spend the night watching the stars, propped on my elbow,

while they are pearls scattered in a deep sea.

This one sets while that one rises,

and the pole star is a leader, as though it were a peg:

blind from birth, having lost his way, alone,

with none of his guides beside him,

in a revolving sphere whose Milky Way

is a river flowing steadily through the meadows.
