Nor have I forgotten her, as death clenched her hand

And opened it, while her eye gazed and looked down.

And her eyelids had brimmed with tears, as though they were

Picked narcissus blossoms, with dew shimmering in them.

And the dreaded thing I had guarded against came to pass,

And the destined thing I had feared was decreed.

And it was said: a parting with no reunion afterward,

And no provision but sorrow and burning anguish.

And if a soul, before its appointed day,

Could die of grief, my soul would have nearly perished.

A crescent moon laid to rest before its light grew full,

And a branch whose lush growth withered while still in leaf.

So, what a wonder—how was our meeting granted?

And oh, the sorrow—from where was separation decreed?

And nothing is left between us but a handful of earth,

Cast upon the eye, or closing over the heart.

I yearn for her when a visit to her is far off,

And weep over her when it draws near, and sob.

And I sink into despair till I cannot speak, as though

The wide earth were spinning about me, and I were struck senseless.

And at times I press her to my breast and find relief,

And at times I stroke her with my palm, and it grows fragrant.

And I never visit her without imagining that she

Clings to my garment—such is my longing for her.

And I imagine that she, with barriers between us,

Understands my words from beyond the earth, and speaks.

And I instill in my heart despair of her, striving for patience,

Yet it returns doubtful of that despair, and does not believe.
