خليليَّmy two dear friends إمّاeither أنto تُعيناyou both help وتُسعداand you both support
وإماor else كَفافاًneutrally لاnot عليَّagainst me ولاnor لِيَاfor me
My two friends, either help me and lend me support,
My friend, either help and bring me joy,
or remain neutral—neither against me nor for me.
Or leave me be, I want naught from you nor do you from me,
فإنّيfor I علىamid غيِّthe folly of الأمانيhopes ورُشدِهاand their wisdom
إِذاif لمnot أجِدْI find ليfor me مُسعداًa helper أوor مواسياa consoler
For, whether my hopes are misguided or wise,
For I, despite hopes that misguide or rightly guide,
if I find no one to help or console me,
If I find no one to bring me joy or console me,
يخففُeases عنيfor me بعضَsome of ماwhat بيَafflicts me أننيthat I
أصوغُI fashion علىdespite شَحطِthe remoteness of المزارِthe place to be visited الأمانياhopes
what eases some of my suffering is that I
To lighten some of my troubles that make me moan,
fashion hopes, though the place I would visit is far away.
I shall string hopes on the pilgrim's hollow.
