أخي ماذا دهاكَ وما أصابَكْ

دعوتُك ثم لم أسمعْ جوابَكْ

My brother, what calamity befell you, and what struck you?

My brother what has afflicted you and what misfortune has befallen you

I called to you, then heard no answer from you.

I called you but did not hear your answer

هبِ الأيامَ لم ترحمْ عويلي

هبِ الأيامَ لم ترحمْ عويلي

ولا حُزني ألم ترحمْ شبابَكْ

ولا حُزني ألم ترحمْ شبابَكْ

Grant that the days had no mercy on my wailing,

Alas the days did not have mercy on my wailing

Nor on my sorrow—had they no mercy on your youth?

Nor my sorrow, did you not have mercy on your youth

وقالوا قد رُزِقْتَ به ثوابَاً

وقالوا قد رُزِقْتَ به ثوابَاً

فقلت لهم ومن يبغي ثوابَكْ

فقلت لهم ومن يبغي ثوابَكْ

And they said, 'You have been granted a reward for losing him.'

And they said you have been granted reward for it

So I said to them, 'And who would seek a reward for losing you?'

So I said to them, who wants your reward
